The Non-Invasive Nature of Chiropractic Treatment

Greetings. This is Dr. Joshua Pollack from Joshua Tree Chiropractic in El Cerrito Plaza in beautiful El Cerrito, California. I wanted to ask you, what do you really know about chiropractic care? Did you know that chiropractic is the largest noninvasive healthcare system in the United States? Chiropractic is noninvasive because it doesn’t require drugs or surgery. Nothing goes inside of your body. The key to that is that we essentially engage your body to heal itself. Chiropractic works with the nervous system, the system that controls every cell and organ in your body.

You see, when parts of your spine get misaligned and they don’t work properly anymore, inflammation occurs, and inflammation can stop the flow of information from your brain to the cells of your body. When that happens, miscommunication occurs, and then your body doesn’t work quite as good as it possibly should. Chiropractic has been a little secret to take care of that for over a hundred years. Statistically speaking, chiropractic care is much safer than invasive drugs and surgery that can often become addictive or have added complications. Now, if you’re unfamiliar, you should know that there’s a lot of different techniques in chiropractic. Some are more forceful than others, but none of them should hurt. Chiropractic, in fact, is one of the most pain-free types of therapies out there to help you achieve optimal health.

Here at Joshua Tree Chiropractic, we offer a wide variety of techniques to enable you to feel most comfortable during your chiropractic experience. Our goal is to make you feel calm and comfortable so that your adjustments are smooth and easy, and you’re able to assimilate to the experience and get the most out of your holistic healthcare. Chiropractic, again, works with your body’s innate ability to heal. Our goal is not to mask your symptoms of pain. Our goal is to find the cause of your pain and alleviate it at the source.

Carpal Tunnel and Chiropractic

Carpal Tunnel

I got the carpal tunnel! My wrists! They’re killing me! It’s going all the up my arms, there’s tingling in my hands. I’m typing, I’m typing, I can’t type any more, what am I going to do? They say I got carpal tunnel!

What does that mean, carpal tunnel? Can I get rid of it? You got to cut it out? You got to add something? Nobody knows?! Your chiropractor knows. Carpal tunnel is inflammation of all those tendons and ligaments in your wrists that enable you to move your hands back and forth, back and forth.

It’s from your posture, from you sitting at the computer too long. From you typing wrong, from you writing wrong. Essentially, you’ve been taught the wrong things and your body is breaking down a little bit, but that’s okay. There is hope.

Your chiropractor can help. You see your chiropractor and they can help adjust the areas of your spine and extremities that have lost proper dynamics. Once proper movement is restored to these areas then the body will begin to relax and your pain and discomfort will reside. It’s been years of abuse and misuse that got you here, so go easy on yourself and let your healing take time too.

All these thing have to work in a perfect harmony for health and wellness to exist in your body. That’s a very specific chiropractic philosophy. That’s a very specific chiropractic approach. The whole body approach. The idea that everything is interconnected, because as you know, in nature and in life, everything is connected.

So you got problems with your wrists? You got pain in your wrists. There’s always a point where you need medical care such as surgery and drugs. Those can be a remedy for those in pain and to help you handle that suffering that you’re going through, but it’s not a solution.

How do we address the cause of these things? Chiropractic addresses the cause. So if you have carpal tunnel, don’t just think it’s in the wrists. You could have elbow dysfunction. You could have shoulder dysfunction. You could have cervical/neck dysfunction. All that dysfunction comes trickling down from your neck preventing your wrists from working right.

If you go to the mechanic in your car, he’s going to align all four of your tires. He doesn’t just align one tire. You gotta check them all. Your body is the same and your chiropractor knows that. So visit your chiropractor especially if you’re starting to get any symptoms in the wrists. If you’re working long hours and you’re working at the computer. They can help you with your posture. They can help you with your ergonomics.

Overall, they can help you remove misalignment from your spine that might be causing these types of chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel.

So be proactive, take care of you and those that you love. Remember to take care of your spine and it will take care of your health. Chiropractic saves lives. I’ll see you at the Joshua Tree. Call us at 510-710-5453

Neck Pain and Holistic Treatment with Chiropractic

Well, you did it. You got neck pain, and it’s bothering you. You’re always cracking your neck, you’re always moving it around. People are going, “What’s going on with your neck?” You can’t find a comfortable position. What happened to your neck, and more importantly, who could help you with your neck pain? Well, your local chiropractor could help. Your local chiropractor knows how to adjust your spine, and how to get you back into health without the use drugs and surgery.

Let’s talk a little bit about your neck. This is your spine, this is your cervical curve in your neck. Now, this curve is created by nature to hold that giant weight over your shoulders that’s called your head. If your head is leaning too forward because you’re texting too much, you’re driving too much, you’re just stressed out, you are going to end up leaning forward. You know, what happens, this curve, it goes away, and if this curve goes away, everything else in your spine: the muscles, the ligaments, the tendons, they have to work so much harder to keep that giant melon of your head aligned and over your body so that you could be balanced, and that the brain knows where you are in space, which believe me, is a very important thing.

You’ve got some neck pain, you go to the chiropractor, the chiropractor takes an X-ray, maybe he doesn’t take an X-ray. He says, “You’ve got a subluxation in your neck.” A neck subluxation, that sounds really bad, but trust me, it’s not as bad as you think. A neck subluxation means that the bones of your neck or the bones of your spine have adjusted, they have adapted to the stresses in your life, and trust me, I understand your stresses. What you’ve got to do, is be proactive, you’ve got to take care of them, you’ve got to work with your chiropractor to remove those subluxations. Those subluxations are preventing the nerve flow from your brain to your body. If it’s in your neck, if there’s a subluxation in your neck, that’s kind of an important part of your body, wouldn’t you say? Everything passes through that, every bit of information from your brain to your toes, to any other part below here, goes through your neck.

Visit your chiropractor, talk to them about spinal health. Talk to them about your cervical curve, and things you could do to support the curves of your spine, because you rely on them, and they rely on you.

Remember to take care of your spine and it will take care of your health. Chiropractic saves lives. I’ll see you at the Joshua Tree.

Understanding and Treating Sciatica

You may ask me, “Hey, Doc, what are some of the things I could do to help with my Sciatica in addition to coming into the chiropractor’s office regularly?” Well, let me tell you there’s a lot you could do! One thing you could do is slim down a little bit. If you’re a bit over weight, all that weight bears on the spine, makes moving around a little bit more cumbersome, adds extra tension and extra stress to the muscles of bones of your spine. You really want to eat well, exercise a couple days a week, get your sweat on and drop some of those extra pounds that are causing some undue stress to your spine.

Another thing you could do is see how long you’re sitting and how you’re standing. If you’re sitting for long periods of time, that’s adding incredible pressure to your low back and your spine. Standing improperly is also equally bad. Prolonged standing can lead to a lot of degenerate problems in the spine. I’d look into that. Find an ergonomic specialist in your area. Talk to your local chiropractor. Make sure you are spending a good amount of time at work sitting down, standing up, moving around, taking short breaks. Keep your spine moving and you’ll be alright.

If you’re also suffering from Sciatica, something to consider is improper lifting techniques. Perhaps you’re in the garden, perhaps you’re in the garage, perhaps you’re at work and you’re lifting up some files. If you do not bring those files close to you and you do not use your legs and you use your low back to lift, that can cause a lot of problems. That can cause a lot of inflammation, misalignments to the spine, of course nothing you’re chiropractor can’t help with. That may also be a contributing factor to your Sciatica. Pay attention to how you lift.

One might ask, “Well, Doc, I have some sciatica. What can we do about it? How long is it going to take?” Well, that’s a very good question. Depending on the severity of your symptoms and the severity of the misalignments in your spine, it could take between months or years to remove the symptoms of Sciatica. One thing is for sure. Chiropractic care is the best bet to go after the cause of your Sciatica and not just treat the symptoms.

Remember to take care of your spine. Take care of your health. Chiropractic saves lives. I’ll see you at the Joshua Tree.

New Study Shows Chiropractic Care Superior To Drugs for Ear Infections in Children

Many people are now turning to Chiropractic instead of traditional allopathic resources to deal with ear infections for children.  But the questions begs to ask, is this form of treatment and care more effective?

In a recent study by PubMed it concludes that Chiropractic care is MORE effective and reduces symptoms faster than allopathic care.

J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 1996 Mar-Apr;19(3):169-77.
Ear infection: a retrospective study examining improvement from chiropractic care and analyzing for influencing factors.
Froehle RM.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE:
The aims of this study were to determine (a) if the patients improved while under chiropractic care; (b) how many treatments were needed to reach improvement; and (c) which factors were associated with early improvement.
DESIGN:
Cohort, nonrandomized retrospective study.
SETTING:
Private chiropractic practice in a Minneapolis suburb.
PARTICIPANTS:
Forty-six children aged 5 yr and under.

INTERVENTION:
All treatments were done by a single chiropractor, who adjusted the subluxations found and paid particular attention to the cervical vertebrae and occiput. Sacral Occipital Technique-style pelvic blocking and the doctor’s own modified applied kinesiology were also used. Typical treatment regimen was three treatments per week for 1 wk, then two treatments per week for 1 wk, then one treatment per week. However, treatment regimen was terminated when there was improvement.

OUTCOME MEASURE:
Improvement was based on parental decision (they stated that the child had no fever, no signs of ear pain, and was totally asymptomatic), and/or the child seemed to be asymptomatic to the treating DC and/or the parent stated that the child’s MD judged the child to be improved. A data abstraction form was used to determine number of treatments used and presence of factors possibly associated with early improvement.

RESULTS:
93% of all episodes improved, 75% in 10 days or fewer and 43% with only one or two treatments. Young age, no history on antibiotic use, initial episode (vs. recurrent) and designation of an episode as discomfort rather than ear infection were factors associated with improvement with the fewest treatments.

CONCLUSION:
Although there were several limitations to this study, the study’s data indicates that limitation of medical intervention and the addition of chiropractic care may decrease the symptoms of ear infection in young children.
